ARRIS and Axcera Announce the Installation of a Metro Wireless Video, Voice and Data System in Iraq
SUWANEE, Ga., July 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS), in association with Axcera, today announced that it has completed the installation of a multimedia delivery system in a major city in Northern Iraq. This deployment consists of wireless-enhanced Cadant(R) C3(TM) Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS), WM450 modems, and Axcera 5700 series base station transmission equipment. The project was developed, implemented and financed by Gulf Research Development (GRD) and represents the first ARRIS DOCSIS(R) 2.0-based broadband fixed access wireless system deployment in the Middle East. Initial system integration was performed by Orbinet, a leading systems integration company in the region.
In the initial installation, the system will provide over 150Mbps of capacity for data services for up to 20,000 subscribers. When fully deployed, the capacity can be increased to over 300Mbps from a single tower. This unique deployment also demonstrates the advantages of the ARRIS Wireless DOCSIS system's multi-vendor interoperability approach to deployments. In addition to providing voice service and high speed internet access from the DOCSIS 2.0- qualified Cadant C3, over 60 channels of full digital video are provided to subscribers 40km from the base.
"We are proud to be able to bring our proven wireless DOCSIS technology to Iraqi consumers in conjunction with Axcera, Orbinet and GRD," said Bryant Isaacs, President of ARRIS New Business Ventures, on announcing the deployment. "We're particularly pleased at how smoothly this deployment has gone thanks to exhaustive pre-shipment testing."
Axcera provided this system as a turnkey solution, fully integrating and testing the ARRIS system and Axcera microwave transmitters in the Axcera factory. Once the system was shipped from the U.S., it was brought up on site with no more test equipment than a simple voltmeter. "This is the first integration of the best-of-breed technology of Axcera and ARRIS. The result is an extremely robust broadband, multi-channel, high-capacity fixed wireless system that is based upon DOCSIS standards," said Jack Wilson, Senior Program Manager for Axcera. "Because the system is completely wireless, the cost and time required to lay copper or fiber facilities is eliminated, allowing an economical and quick deployment, and the super-cell architecture provides exceptional coverage."
