3G Americas Publishes White Paper on Mobile Digital TV

BELLEVUE, Wash., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- 3G Americas, a trade association supporting the wireless industry throughout the Americas, today published "Mobile TV - The Next Big Killer App in Wireless?" an executive overview on mobile TV from user expectations and potential markets/business models to technical challenges. The paper explores the various mobile TV technologies including DVB-H, DMB, ISDB-T, MBMS, FLO, and IPDC.

"A variety of delivery vehicles for mobile TV service are here today," commented Chris Pearson, President of 3G Americas. "However, due to this wide variety of emerging technologies that enable mobile TV, a fair amount of confusion exists in the market. This educational paper sorts through that alphabet soup and outlines the various features and benefits possible with these different technologies."

Mobile TV -- marrying the mass appeal of TV with mobility -- is coming to the U.S. marketplace and the opportunities are considerable. Ultimately, the operators' choice of standard could help determine how quickly the applications grow as well as market size. This 3G Americas' white paper provides a straightforward overview to the current status of the standards being considered.

Although detailed business cases are still being worked out among key stakeholders in the value chain, early indications are that a mobile TV service could be a strong application for carriers even if only a portion of the subscriber base adds the capability in their service package. According to the IPDC Forum, 20-30% of all mobile subscribers interviewed believe mobile TV is a "good" or "great" idea while visiongain predicts the DTV (Digital TV) handset market to grow to over 105 million units worldwide by 2009.

"The adoption of distribution models such as unicast versus broadcast are expected to have a significant impact on the rate at which the mobile TV market develops," continued Pearson. "For this reason, these distribution models are explained in our paper to help key stakeholders better understand their options."

The Mobile TV Executive Overview white paper was prepared by members of 3G Americas and is available for free download at the 3G Americas' website: www.3gamericas.org.
