Sunscreen Use Down as Skin Cancer Rates Increase

Over the past year, the number of Americans using sunscreen, a primary protector against skin cancer, has declined. At the same time, more Americans, including children, are being diagnosed with skin cancer than ever before. A new survey by the nonprofit Sun Safety Alliance, which is launching the first annual Sun Safety Week June fifth through the eleventh, shows a 12-point decline in the percentage of Americans who report using sunscreen when outdoors, from 72 percent to 60 percent.

The survey findings also show that large percentages of individuals are not following other recommended precautions, such as covering exposed skin, staying in the shade and wearing a hat.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation has announced the birth of a healthy 310 pound, female Asian elephant calf -- an unprecedented seventeenth birth for the Ringling Brothers Center. The 38- year-old mother, Mala, delivered the calf on April 21, 2005 after just 40 minutes of labor. The newborn is Mala's sixth calf, and was fathered by Charlie, an Asian elephant sire at the Center.

With fewer than 35-thousand Asian elephants left on the planet, the birth represents Ringling Brothers' commitment to the future preservation of this endangered species, one baby step at a time.
