Richard Perle, Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, Tom Foley and James Schlesinger Discuss the Rise of the Neoconservative Movement and its Impact on U.S. Foreign Policy
Airing on Public Radio Stations Beginning on June 22, 2005
WASHINGTON, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Since September 11th, many observers in the United States and around the world have pointed to the neoconservatives as the leading force behind the Bush Administration's push for war in Iraq, its ambitious effort to spread democracy in the Muslim world and its unabashed use of America's power abroad. In its latest public radio program, America Abroad examines the meaning of neoconservatism, its history and its impact on American foreign policy.
America Abroad: The Neocons and America's Foreign Policy, anchored by veteran journalist Ray Suarez, with reports from correspondents Steve Roberts, Garrick Utley and Margaret Warner, features interviews with some of today's most prominent neoconservatives and their detractors on the ideological and historical roots of the movement. The program examines whether neoconservatism will be a defining and enduring force in America's foreign policy in the years to come and how the war in Iraq has exposed divergent opinions among neoconservatives. It also looks back at the foreign policy views and legacy of the late Sen. Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson (D-Wash.), a hero to many neoconservatives. The program concludes with a roundtable discussion with historians and scholars, led by correspondent Marvin Kalb, which explores the broader context of neoconservatism in American history, and how and why it has survived.
"The word 'neoconservative' is recognized across the United States and around the world today, but how many people really understand what the word means?" asks Aaron Lobel, president of America Abroad Media and executive producer of The Neocons and America's Foreign Policy. "This program tries to go beyond the hype and headlines and give listeners a deeper understanding of neoconservatism and its place in American history."
Participants in the program include: Eliot Cohen, professor, School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS); Amb. Thomas S. Foley, partner, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP; Francis Fukuyama, professor, SAIS; David Hendrickson, professor, Colorado College; Charles Krauthammer, nationally- syndicated columnist; Bill Kristol, editor, The Weekly Standard; Melvyn Leffler, professor, University of Virginia; Ernest May, professor, Harvard University; John Micklethwait, U.S. editor, The Economist; Richard Perle, resident fellow, American Enterprise Institute (AEI); James Schlesinger, counselor, Center for Strategic and International Studies; and Ben Wattenberg, senior fellow, AEI.
