World Premiere of Weezer's Newest Album 'Make Believe' to Debut on MySpace.com May 5
LOS ANGELES, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MySpace.com today announced it will launch Weezer's first new album in three years, "Make Believe," in its entirety, streaming exclusively on the website from May 5 through May 10. The band's recently released single, "Beverly Hills," has climbed to #4 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart and the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album will hit retail May 10.
The multi-platinum recording artists' newest album "Make Believe" will debut on MySpace.com at 12:01 a.m. PDT on May 5 and follows the success of recent MySpace member listening parties and Weezer tour ticket giveaways. The integrated, joint promotion between Weezer and MySpace included events in eight local markets where fans could listen to the new CD in-stores. The promotion also included online ticket giveaways to each of the sold-out shows in the band's current North American tour (which began April 26 in Vancouver, BC). The integrated program to date has resulted in a 700 percent increase in activity among Weezer's online friends, now more than 80,000 people on MySpace.com.
"Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of Weezer, has been a member with an active profile on our site since the early days of MySpace. As a result, many of our users feel a deep connection with the band," said Chris DeWolfe, chief executive officer, MySpace.com. "MySpace user response to the 'Beverly Hills' single and anticipation of the new album has been unbelievable."
Encompassing the band's recording sessions throughout the past year; "Make Believe" will be accessible at http://www.myspace.com/weezer and can be shared through MySpace by passing on the band's profile link. By partnering with MySpace, Weezer and Geffen Records will have access to MySpace's more than 14 million members and the music will be open to anyone visiting MySpace Music.
"MySpace gives the band an incredibly compelling and organic content distribution platform," said Aaron Foreman, head of new media, Geffen Records. "With the MySpace listening parties, ticket promotions and exclusive streaming, we are able to bring Weezer's new music to its most ardent fans, allowing us to build buzz before the album hits retail."
With more than 240,000 artists that upload songs, promote concerts and connect with fans, MySpace's viral network adds a new dimension to the way music is introduced.
