Comcast Treats Area Students to 'Beethoven Unplugged,' a Special Concert Performance
Nearly 1,500 Public Elementary School Students From Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and Baltimore County to Attend
BALTIMORE, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- In partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, Comcast will host nearly 1,500 students and chaperones for a special Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) concert at the Joseph F. Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at 6:00 p.m. Students from Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Baltimore County will be treated to "Beethoven Unplugged," a concert of works by Ludwig van Beethoven designed to introduce young people to classical music.
As the students arrive, they will have an opportunity to participate in a "Musical Petting Zoo." Each school group will be matched with a BSO musician who will give a hands-on lesson about an instrument and how to play it. Following the interactive musician activity, students will be ushered into the symphony hall for their private concert.
In anticipation of this unique program, students at participating schools were introduced to Andrew Constantine, assistant conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, via a Comcast-produced video interview. The BSO Education Department developed lesson plans exploring the life of the composer and the works to be performed. The lesson plans were shared with teachers to help prepare the students for their special evening.
"Thanks to Comcast, nearly 1,500 Maryland schoolchildren will experience a unique glimpse into the life and works of a classical master," said Nancy S. Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools. "There is no better way to teach our children about classical music than to let them experience it for themselves. Tonight is a perfect example of the power of public-private partnerships to positively impact our children."
"It is truly our pleasure to host this memorable evening at the Symphony," said Barbara A. Gehrig, senior vice president of Comcast's Maryland-Delaware region. "Education is a priority for Comcast. We recognize the importance of the arts to academic success and are excited about being able to provide this opportunity for so many students."
Anne Arundel County will be represented by students from Van Bokkelen Elementary and Rippling Woods Elementary. In Baltimore County, students from Woodmoor Elementary, Sandalwood Elementary and Mars Estates Elementary will participate. In Baltimore City, students from Leith Walk Elementary, Marie Garnett Faring Elementary and the Edison Partnerships Schools Gilmor Elementary, Montebello Elementary and Furman Templeton Elementary will enjoy this special evening.
"Our hope is that students will remember this concert as a very unique experience that introduced them to music that transcends cultures, languages, ages and beliefs," added Gehrig.
"Comcast is a partner with the Maryland State Department of Education on so many initiatives - from scholarships and teacher awards to wiring classrooms. The company understands the importance of our children and their impact on tomorrow. Whenever possible Comcast steps up and delivers
opportunities, like this evening's concert, that help our students reach their potential," added Grasmick.
CitiFinancial has generously underwritten bus transportation for the students to the performance.
