DiBcom Brings Mobile Digital TV to Microsoft Windows Mobile-Based Devices

LAS VEGAS, April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- NAB 2005, Las Vegas -- DiBcom: DVB booth SU11408 -- On the heels of demonstrating mobile broadcast digital TV (DTV) reception in the world's first fully functional DVB-H (digital video broadcast -- handheld) enabled handset, DiBcom today announced that the drivers of its DIB7000-H(TM) chipset have been ported onto the Windows CE operating system. As the first company to introduce a mobile DTV chip based on the open industry DVB-H standard, DiBcom's support of Microsoft Windows Mobile software is a significant boost to developers planning to integrate DTV services into consumer devices such as Smartphones, PocketPCs and portable media players. To ease this integration, DiBcom is now offering a complete DIB7000-H reference design based on a DVB-H Secure Digital (SD) memory card that can be inserted into devices equipped with Windows Mobile software and an interface slot.

"DTV services in handheld devices based on the DVB-H standard a very compelling feature to the consumer," said Allen Nogee, principal analyst of Wireless Component Technology at In-Stat. "The combination of the open interfaces offered by Windows Mobile software and the proven performance of DiBcom's DVB-H technology will allow the development of third-party mobile broadcast DTV services such as electronic service guides and digital rights management. The availability of such applications has been a boon to the public acceptance and commercial success of emerging technologies and is expected to have the same effect on DVB-H."

A DVB-H equipped Windows Mobile-based Smartphone is being demonstrated at NAB in Las Vegas by Microsoft and DiBcom using a live TV signal broadcast by wireless infrastructure provider Crown Castle. The cooperation between DiBcom and Microsoft offers an open platform for DVB-H development, trials, and deployments. The proven performance of the DiBcom solution makes it perfectly suited for use in DVB-H networks deployed in the U.S. by Crown Castle as well as the rest of the world.

"DiBcom is providing the industry's first DVB-H chip to be embedded onto a SD-card format plugged into a Windows CE based handheld device," stated Stuart Pekowsky, new business development manager, DiBcom. "We are pleased to offer support for development of platforms based on Windows mobile software. The 'Proven Performance' of DiBcom's DVB-H technology running on such platforms now extends our coverage to a major market segment."

Demonstrations of the new DiBcom DIB7000 digital TV chip running on a Windows CE platform can be seen NAB in Microsoft's booth SL332 and by DiBcom at DVB booth SU11408.
