Coach Carter to Visit Cuyahoga Community College

His life was featured in 'Coach Carter,' a film starring Samuel L. Jackson; free program Tuesday, May 3 at the Metro Campus Theatre is part of Tri-C's annual sociology and social work information fair

CLEVELAND, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Coach Ken Carter will speak at Cuyahoga Community College on Tuesday, May 3 at noon at the Metropolitan Campus Theatre, 2900 Community College Avenue in Cleveland. This free program is open to the public and is part of the College's Seventh Annual Sociology and Social Work Information Fair.

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures/MTV Films released "Coach Carter," a movie featuring the life story of Coach Carter. It starred Samuel L. Jackson as Coach Carter and co-starred Ashanti. A highly sought-after speaker for youth groups and educational panels, Carter has appeared on "The Today Show," "The ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings" and CNN.

Carter is known for leading the Richmond, California high school's basketball program from 1997 to 2002. He made news when he locked out his undefeated varsity basketball team in order to push them to improve their grades. Carter not only closed the Richmond High School gym, but he banned all basketball-related activities and was prepared to cancel the entire season because 15 of the 45 players were not meeting classroom achievements they agreed to meet in contracts they signed earlier in the semester.

Coach Carter is an advocate for Richmond's youth and is active in his community. He has led activities to draw awareness to the deteriorating state of our schools and the need for students, parents, teachers, and school board officials to commit to making a difference. His efforts proved successful, and subsequently Richmond High received building enhancements and computers from the Office of the Secretary of Education.
