SBS Interactive to Provide duo Technology for University of Maryland Study to Attack Epidemic of Childhood Obesity

SBS Interactive to Provide duo Technology for University of Maryland Study to Attack Epidemic of Childhood Obesity

Noted Pediatric Medical Researcher to Use Company's Interactive Television System to Boost Activity Levels in Children

TORONTO, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SBS Interactive, (OTC Bulletin Board: SBSS), an innovator in the development of next-generation immersive and interactive video and television technology, will be donating several of its proprietary duo(TM) interactive television systems for use in a groundbreaking study on the problem of childhood obesity being conducted at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Company's participation in the study was announced by Todd Gotlieb, President and CEO, SBS Interactive.

The study is under the direction of Dr. Yves M. Nordmann, a fellow in Pediatrics and Endocrinology, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Nordmann, who has conducted several other studies on the growing problem of pediatric obesity, conceived of the study after learning of the Company's duo(TM) interactive television system. After receiving a demonstration of the system's ability to engage viewers in physical activity, he hypothesized that the technology would be a useful tool for reversing the sedentary effects that television normally has on children.

"These days, children don't get enough physical activity, and television viewing is a clear contributor to this problem," said Dr. Nordmann. "The amount of television viewing time directly correlates with obesity incidence. The main objective of this study is to increase activity among the subjects for about 20 to 30 minutes per day, but in the long run we would hope for a decrease in weight, as well."

SBS Interactive's duo(TM) is an immersive and interactive video system that plugs into standard television sets, enabling the creation of completely new categories of video-based training, instruction and entertainment. The duo(TM) system uses the same blue screen technology used by the movie production industry to both put the viewer in the picture, and to bring the program into the viewer's room or office, where the viewer then becomes a player in the video production. Thus, users see themselves inserted into the video production, where they become part of the program in a fully dynamic, intelligent and interactive manner.

Medical researchers have long blamed television viewing for reducing the amount of healthy physical activity engaged in by children and adults. Not only is television viewing an essentially inactive behavior, but Dr. Nordmann points out that people often consume high caloric junk food while watching TV.

SBS Interactive has agreed to donate 20 of its duo(TM) units to assist with the two-month study as well as developing the content for the DVD that includes 25 minutes of a fun exercise activity combined with nutrition tips.

"We believe strongly that although duo(TM) has intrinsic entertainment value, it can also assist in education and making positive changes in behavior and lifestyle, especially for children," said Mr. Gotlieb. "We are excited to be able to contribute in the University of Maryland study. Dr. Nordmann quickly had the insight that duo's innovative interactive form of video could help transform television from being part of the problem of childhood obesity, to being part of the solution. Our hope is that duo(TM) will make television both more entertaining and healthier for children. This study is an excellent example of SBS Interactive's strategy of creating multiple applications for duo(TM)."

The study will include children ages 10 to 14 years of age from the Baltimore, Maryland area over a two-month period with observations of long term effects extending over 6 months. The subjects will be selected from primary care pediatricians associated with the University of Maryland Medical Center as well as through other Baltimore-area pediatricians. The study will be divided into two groups; one is an intervention group using SBS Interactive's duo(TM) with an angle monitor to determine movement and the other is a control group.
