Modest Increase in Public's Optimism About Situation in Iraq, But Pluralities Still Pessimistic

A new Harris Poll finds that there has been a modest decline in public pessimism about Iraq since the same questions were last asked in January of this year. However, the pessimists continue to outnumber the optimists on all questions. And a 56 to 42 percent majority of all U.S. adults continue to give President Bush negative ratings on his handling of Iraq.

Consumers Are Changing the Way They Access Media, According to a New Study by Arbitron and Edison Media Research

A study says consumer media habits are changing as people watch video-on-demand services through their cable or satellite provider, access news online and listen to Internet radio. That's according to a new study by Arbitron and Edison Media Research.

The study, Internet and Multimedia 2005: The On-Demand Media Consumer, finds that an estimated 27 million Americans own one or more on-demand media devices -- such as a TiVo D-V-R, iPod or other portable M-P-three player -- and also exhibit multiple behaviors that show a heavy tendency toward an on-demand media lifestyle.

The study focuses on devices and services that allow Americans to exercise more control over the media they consume:

* Twenty-seven percent of 12- to 17- year olds own an iPod or other portable M-P-three player. * An estimated 43 million Americans choose to record T-V programming to watch at a different time (using technology such as a V-C-R or TiVo/D-V-R). * Seventy-six percent of consumers own at least one D-V-D. Thirty-nine percent own 20 or more D-V-Ds in their personal collection. * Awareness of X-M Satellite Radio has tripled since 2002, from 17 percent to 50 percent, while awareness of SIRIUS Satellite Radio has increased even more significantly, from eight percent to 54 percent.

Fish Oil Holds Promise in Alzheimer's Fight

Even our grandmothers told us fish was "brain food" -- and now scientists have evidence to back the claim.

Researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of California at Los Angeles found that a diet high in docosahexenoic acid, or D-H-A -- an omega-3 fatty acid found in relatively high concentrations in cold-water fish -- dramatically slowed the progression of Alzheimer's disease in mice. Specifically, D-H-A cut the harmful brain plaques that mark the disease. The results appear in the March 23 online edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.
