Oy! PMS, WMD, and Ozzie and Harriet Are Among the Latest Additions to the Oxford English Dictionary
A few years ago, few people outside of the arms industry used the phrase weapon of mass destruction on a daily basis. Now, weapon of mass destruction and its abbreviation W-M-D have become two of more than two-thousand new and revised entries in the online edition of The Oxford English Dictionary.
The war on terror isn't the only field that is contributing new words to the lexicon. Oy is now defined as an interjection ("expressing surprise, dismay, or grief'), a verb ("to urge on or incite," an obscure usage from the sixteenth century), and a noun ("a grandchild" but only in Scotland).
The phrase Ozzie and Harriet is another new addition to The Oxford English Dictionary Online, both as a noun and an adjective ("a married couple, esp. regarded as exemplifying traditional, wholesome, or idealized domesticity").
New words and usage can come from any source -- for example, fans of The Grateful Dead will notice that Deadhead, shroom, and Owsley ("an extremely potent, high-quality type of L-S-D") are all included in this recent update.
Palookaville, panic attack, Great Satan, haul ass, fuzzy dice, uni-brow, pain management, cool Britannia, identity theft, director's cut, and panache are all featured in this latest update.
