Postal Service Dedicates New Stamp Featuring Singer Marian Anderson

Postal Service Dedicates New Stamp Featuring Singer Marian Anderson 28th Stamp in the Black Heritage Commemorative Stamp Series B-ROLL FEEDS THURSDAY, JANUARY 27 3:30 PM- 4:00 PM ET STORY INFO: The United States Postal Service will be dedicating a new stamp to singer Marian Anderson. This will be the 28th stamp in the Black Heritage commemorative stamp series. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 27 at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Memorial Continental Hall at Constitution Hall -- a symbolic choice since this was the place where the operatic and concert artist was once prohibited from performing because of her skin color. This B-Roll package includes footage of the dedication ceremony and interviews with: * John M. Nolan, Deputy Postmaster General, U.S. Postal Service * Presley Merritt Wagoner, President General, Daughters of the American Revolution * Denyce Graves, mezzo-soprano * Allan Keiler, musicologist and author * James DePreist, nephew of Marian Anderson, & Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at the Juilliard School Duke Ellington School of the Performing Arts Anderson is known as one of the nation's greatest classically trained singers and an important figure in the struggle of black Americans for racial equality. Anderson was a victim of racism in 1939 when the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to make its Washington, DC Constitution Hall available due to a "white artists only" policy. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who witnessed Anderson's performance at a White House dinner, resigned from the DAR and made arrangements for Anderson to perform before an audience of 75,000 at the Lincoln Memorial while millions more heard it on the radio. Anderson subsequently performed at Constitution Hall on several occasions after the 1939 event.
