Belo Operating Companies Raise More Than $3.6 Million for Victims of the South Asia Tsunami DALLAS, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE:BLC) announced today that its television stations, newspapers and cable operations have partnered locally with charities, civic organizations, businesses and other media to raise more than $3.6 million for the tsunami relief effort in South Asia. Many of the fundraising efforts continue. Belo properties mobilized fundraising campaigns shortly after the tsunami struck on December 26, pooling community-wide resources to launch telethons, special newscasts, charity-related news stories and other grassroots fundraising efforts drawing attention to the plight of the victims. "The humanitarian outpouring from Americans that we have witnessed firsthand in the communities we serve is humbling and heartening," said Jack Sander, Belo's president/Media Operations. "I'm very proud of the local efforts our television stations, cable channels and newspapers have made in extending a hand to people and nations who have been devastated. A summary of the fundraising efforts is provided below: Belo Media Properties Tsunami Fundraising Efforts Belo Northwest KING-TV partnered with Bank of America to Properties create the "Northwest Response: Tsunami Seattle/Tacoma -- KING- Relief Fund," which encouraged donations TV (NBC)/KONG-TV (IND), online and at bank locations. The station NorthWest Cable News also broadcast a one-hour telethon that Portland -- KGW-TV (NBC) was simulcast on KONG-TV, NWCN, KREM-TV Spokane -- KREM-TV (CBS)/ and KSKN-TV. KGW-TV aired its own one- KSKN-TV (WB) hour telethon. Other promotional efforts Boise -- KTVB-TV (NBC), included Public Service Announcements and 24/7 Cable News special broadcasts on charitable organizations. Donations collected by these properties will go to various charities, including Mercy Corps, World Vision and Northwest Medical Teams. Belo Southwest Belo properties in the Southwest Properties partnered with local banks and area Phoenix -- KTVK-TV (IND)/ schools, setting up "800" numbers, phone KASW-TV (WB) banks and community-based donation Tucson -- KMSB-TV (FOX)/ locations. Other promotional efforts KTTU-TV (UPN) included PSAs and special stories on Riverside, CA -- The charitable organizations. Donations Press-Enterprise collected by these properties will go to various charities, including The Salvation Army. Belo Texas Properties Belo properties in Texas, in various Dallas/Fort Worth -- efforts, partnered with former Presidents WFAA-TV (ABC), Texas Bush and Clinton, local radio stations Cable News, The Dallas and businesses to produce a variety of Morning News, Denton fundraising events, including a daylong Record-Chronicle telethon featuring former President Houston -- KHOU-TV (CBS) George H.W. Bush, a one-day on-location San Antonio -- KENS-TV fund drive, PSAs and special stories (CBS) about charitable organizations. Donations Austin -- KVUE-TV (ABC) collected by these properties will go to several charities, including the Bush- Clinton Houston Tsunami Fund, The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. Belo Mid-Atlantic & Belo Mid-Atlantic & Rhode Island properties, Rhode Island Properties in various efforts, partnered with grocery St. Louis -- KMOV-TV stores, banks, credit unions and other media (CBS) to organize community fundraising campaigns. Charlotte -- WCNC-TV Other promotional efforts included PSAs and (NBC) special stories on charitable organizations. Hampton/Norfolk -- WVEC- Donations collected by these properties will TV (ABC) go to various charities, including the New Orleans -- WWL-TV American Red Cross.
