American Jewish Committee, U.S. India Political Action Committee Urge Philadelphia Radio Station to Fire Morning Show Hosts NEW YORK, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Jewish Committee and the U.S. India Political Action Committee are urging a Philadelphia radio station to take strong disciplinary action against two morning show hosts for their recent profane and racist program targeting the Indian community. In the letter to Rich Lewis, general manager of WUSL Power 99 FM, the AJC and USINPAC ask him to "move expeditiously" against morning hosts Star and Buc Wild, "including consideration of terminating your employment of Star and Buc Wild." While on the air on December 15, Star telephoned a call center in India taking mail orders from the U.S. for hair beads. Listeners heard Star verbally abuse a female agent named Steena, repeatedly calling her a "b****" and using a four-letter word. He also referred to the Indian woman twice as a "dirty rat eater," and then hung up, laughing. Although both Star and Buc Wild were suspended for one day, "we believe this measure to have been woefully inadequate, and urge you to take further steps to discipline these men for their actions," wrote the AJC and USINPAC in their letter sent today to Mr. Lewis. "Only then can you begin to rectify the unfortunate situation they have created, and to temper the outrage and pain they have caused." The letter to Mr. Lewis was signed by Jeffrey Sinensky, AJC's general counsel; Sanjay Puri, executive director of USINPAC; and, Ilana Krop Wilensik, assistant director of AJC's Philadelphia Chapter. AJC and USINPAC have historically been, and remain, staunch defenders of free speech as protected by the First Amendment. But the broadcast contained profanity and racist remarks that have no place on radio airwaves, or anywhere else. The FCC has ruled that profanity is prohibited on broadcast radio between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Source: American Jewish Committee CONTACT: Kenneth Bandler, Director of Public Relations and Communications, +1-212-891-6771, bandlerk@ajc.org, or Lisa Fingeret Roth, Assistant Director of Public Relations, +1-212-891-1385, rothl@ajc.org, both of the American Jewish Committee Web site: http://www.ajc.org/ ------- Profile: International Entertainment
