West Goes East - CalArts at the Kitchen Spotlights the Legacy of The California Institute of the Arts The Four Night Multi-Media Performance Festival to Feature Noted CalArts Alumni and 10 World Premiers NEW YORK, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- From gamelan to Mozart to human sculpture and digital dance, The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and The Kitchen present West Goes East-CalArts at the Kitchen. The festival, which runs from Wednesday, January 26 to Saturday, January 29, will present a wide array of multimedia performances highlighting the diversity of CalArts alumni based in the New York City Metropolitan Area. CalArts is considered one of the nations' foremost laboratories for innovative artistic practice. West Goes East features 23 Artists, over 100 performers, and includes 10 world premiers. Special guests include Mort Subotnick, electronic music pioneer and co-director of CalArts' Composition program and the Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology and legendary film composer David Shire. It is curated by Shem Guibbory in consultation with Dan Joseph and John King. Highlights of the series: Wednesday Multimedia artist Kathy Rowe. World Premiere by composer/turntablist Marina Rosenfeld Works by composer/performers Earl Howard and Denman Maroney Thursday The Evolution of a 21st Century Violinist performed by Shem Guibbory (accompanied by frame drummer Glen Velez and percussionist Lynn Vartan) The National Theater of Elsewhere presents Deviates from the Master Plan, written by Brian Howrey Friday World Premiere of 16 (R)evolutions by digital dance company Troika Ranch Saturday Co-hosted by Randall Packer, Secretary of The U.S. Department of Art and Technology World Premiere of The Re-taking of Pelham One Two Three by The Code Ensemble, led by Steve Horowitz, and filmmaker Jane Brill. The nation's first art institute to offer BFAs and MFAs in both the visual and performing arts, CalArts is dedicated to training and nurturing the next generation of professional artists, fostering brilliance and innovation within the broadest context possible. Emphasis is placed on new and experimental work and students are admitted solely on the basis of artistic ability.
