Recovery Advocate Leslie Glass Receives ASAM Media Award
SARASOTA, Fla., April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) honors Leslie Glass with the 2016 Media Award for her documentary, The Secret World of Recovery at the 47(th) ASAM Annual Conference on Saturday, April 16, 2016, in Baltimore, Maryland. The ASAM award recognizes the film for improving the public's understanding of addiction, treatment and recovery. ASAM President, Jeffrey Goldsmith, MD, DLFAPA, FASAM, will present the award. ASAM represents a medical specialty society of over 3,700 physicians. Its mission is to increase access to and improve the quality of addiction treatment, to educate physicians, and other health care providers and the public, to support research and prevention, to promote the appropriate role of the physician in the care of patients with addictive disorders, and to establish Addiction Medicine as a specialty recognized by professional organizations, governments, physicians, purchasers and consumers of health care services and the general public.
"I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the top addiction physicians," said Glass. The best-selling author and documentarian is the founder of Reach Out Recovery (ROR), the largest nonprofit recovery portal on the internet. "In the last decade the media has offered vivid portraits of addiction in many formats, but very little reporting on recovery. There are 120 million Americans impacted by addiction with no resources to help cope with the devastation to their families. This underserved population desperately needs good news, support, and resources. When my family traveled its recovery journey, I realized that the positive untold story of people in recovery could make a difference for millions who currently suffer in silence."
The Secret World of Recovery reveals the other side of addiction. Glass and her daughter Lindsey crossed the country, talking with people in recovery at every social and economic level. The result produced the first documentary to explore family relationships and life after addiction. The documentary, now used in recovery centers and colleges, highlights recovery benefits.
The Secret World of Recovery is available on Amazon and as a gift to donors of ROR which provides up-to-the-minute prevention and recovery information, as well as healthy living guidance and support. The goal of its founders and board is to lift the addiction stigma and provide a positive online community of resources.
