Allumette is a technical and cinematic achievement signaling a new era in storytelling

NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO, April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- How many times has a virtual reality film made you cry?

Allumette--the second feature film from Penrose Studios--is a poignant, emotional story about love and sacrifice that has brought test screeners to tears. A select group of film-goers will have an opportunity to view the full-length feature when it premieres at the annual Tribeca Film Festival on April 14. Tissues are a must!

Unlike the vast majority of VR films and video games, Allumette combines epic and sensitive storytelling with vivid and vibrant hand-crafted VR visuals, innovative technical design and an engaging musical score, transporting viewers to another world--physically, spiritually and emotionally.

The movie chronicles the life of a young girl named Allumette, who lives in a fantastical city in the clouds. After enduring tragedy, she grasps at hope for her future. Loosely inspired by TheLittle Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen, Allumette is an account of the love family members have for one another, and the sacrifices and choices they make for the greater good.

Described as the "Pixar of VR" by TechCrunch, Penrose Studios' innovative work has been recognized and celebrated by some of the film industry's most discerning critics. The company is backed by key venture capital partners and recently secured the virtual reality industry's largest seed round of $8.5 million.

Penrose's leadership and staff include veterans from many of the animated motion picture industry's largest studios.

Chung--formerly of Pixar and creator of Oculus Story Studio--is a pioneer in the field of virtual reality. His previous VR film, The Rose and I, an adaptation of The Little Prince, also won rave reviews, with BuzzFeed calling it "The Best Argument for Virtual Reality."

The Studio's content will be available for the consumer version of the Sony PlayStation VR starting in October. "The Rose and I" was also offered as part of the launch lineup for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Samsung Gear VR.

A teaser of "Allumette - Chapter 1" will be available in the next few days, to owners of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, giving viewers a chance to experience the Allumette story. All three chapters (the full film) - which runs for nearly 20 minutes - will be released later this year on the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
