Professor Michael P. Steinberg of Brown University to Lead The American Academy in Berlin

BERLIN, March 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --



The Trustees of the American Academy in Berlin have appointed Professor Michael P.
Steinberg as the Academy's next president. Professor Steinberg, Vice Provost for the Arts
and the Barnaby Conrad and Mary Critchfield Keeney Professor of History, and Professor of
Music and German Studies at Brown University, will assume his duties on August 15, 2016.
He will succeed Professor Gerhard Casper, former President of Stanford University, who has
led the Academy on an interim basis since July 2015.



Professor Casper said: "I am extremely pleased that Professor Steinberg has agreed to
serve as president. His broad experience and innovative approaches will enhance the
Academy's programs to foster greater understanding and dialogue between the United States
and Germany. With Michael Steinberg, an Academy alumnus (Anna-Maria Kellen Fellow, fall
2003) will assume the leadership."



Professor Steinberg served as Founding Director of the Cogut Center for the Humanities
at Brown from 2005 to 2015, and between 2009 and 2013 was dramaturg on a joint production
of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen for the Berlin State Opera and the Teatro alla Scala,
Milan. Steinberg is a member of the Executive Board of the Consortium of Humanities
Centers and Institutes (CHCI).



Educated at Princeton University and the University of Chicago (PhD), Steinberg has
been a visiting professor at these two schools as well as at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes
en Sciences Sociales in Paris and National Tsing-hua University in Taiwan. He was a member
of the Cornell University Department of History between 1988 and 2005.



Principal research interests include the cultural history of modern Germany and
Austria with particular attention to German-Jewish intellectual history and the cultural
history of music.
