New Report Reinforces Critical Role of Creative Industries in Michigan Economy

DETROIT, March 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Creative Many Michigan released its comprehensive quantitative and qualitative study, the Creative State Michigan: 2016 Creative Industries Report, focused on employment, wages and establishments data and the impact of creative industries in Michigan. The report is available at http://www.creativemany.org/research/ 2016-creative-industries-report/.

"The Creative Industries Report demonstrates the need to acknowledge the creative industries as essential to building economic resilience in our state," said Jennifer Goulet, president and CEO of Creative Many Michigan. "The creative industries are growing but not to the extent of Michigan's other sectors. As creatives continue to play an integral role as innovators across all sectors of the economy, our study outlines the possibilities requiring cultivation and forecasts for the future to mobilize and influence an ever-changing, diverse global economy."

Collectively, the sector contributed nearly $5 billion in wages to Michigan's economy in 2014, with nearly 89,000 employees in 10,706 establishments. However, employment growth was only 1.49 percent from 2011 to 2014, compared to 6.1 percent for all industries in Michigan.

"Economies with robust creative industries are outperforming their peers economically. A healthy and diversified creative ecosystem builds an opportunity for people, businesses and communities," said Helen Kerr of Kerr Smith in Toronto, Canada, which led the study's research, content and design. "The report serves as a new foundation for the strategic priorities, policies and investments essential to positioning the creative industries for economic growth opportunities in Michigan, especially as the state continues to experience a transitioning economy and anticipates jobs not yet created."

The creative industries, both for-profit and nonprofit, are represented by a broad range of occupations - from artists to industrial designers. The report focuses on 12 industry clusters: advertising; architecture; art schools, artists and agents; creative technology; culture and heritage; design; fashion garment and textile; film, AV and broadcasting; literary, publishing and print; music; performing arts; and visual arts and craft.

The Creative Industries Report uses economic and social measures to present statistical and contextual evidence. Employment and wage data from 2011-2014 in the aforementioned industry clusters was secured from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau and analyzed. Additionally, interviews with 31 Michigan thought-leaders; four regional workshops in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Flint; and a statewide Creative Economy Policy Summit engaged industry and community leaders. The report also provides an in-depth look at the automotive and product design industries, as well as film and media.

Funding partners for the 2016 Creative Industries Report include the U.S. Economic Development Administration, The Kresge Foundation, Masco Corporation Foundation, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Ford Foundation, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Detroit Creative Corridor Center and Prima Civitas.
