Backed by SPJIMR, FMB Alumni Launch Exciting New Initiative

MUMBAI, March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Alumni of the S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) Family Managed
Business (FMB) programme have launched an exciting new initiative that will enable them to
re-engage with faculty members long after they have passed out and build opportunities to
exchange ideas, discuss business-related events and draw lessons from movies.

The first such movie viewing was held at the 300-seater SPJIMR auditorium on the
SPJIMR campus on Friday, March 11. More than 50 FMB alumni came together with the current
FMB batch on campus to watch the movie 'Inside Job,' an Academy award-winning documentary
on the 2008 global financial crisis that wrecked economies worldwide.

The event was billed by FMB alumni as a 'movie networking night' and built upon a
series of events that have helped bring FMB alumni closer and enabled them work with their
Alma Mater to explore new ideas and opportunities.

Sandesh Mestry, alumni of FMB Batch 1, who passed out in 1999 and now runs MBMC
Consulting, a family business consultancy, said, "The basic agenda is to network, to learn
and to grow. We feel FMBs have lot of potential but there are a lot of challenges and the
best way to learn is to learn from each other because somebody else may have faced the
problems I am facing today and already solved it. I can learn a practical way of doing
things."

Mestry said FMB alumni are working closely with SPJIMR to build the initiative. "We
always want to work with the Institute and we are happy to be able to do this in a way
that is meaningful and purposeful. At the end of the day, we have a deep connection with
SPJIMR. We always want to keep that, nurture it and grow with it," he said.

Ms. Avni Sanghavi, FMB alumni from the '17Sep' batch and Director (Marketing) of Veena
Developers, which builds residential and commercial properties in Mumbai said, "Learning
through movies is an exciting new initiative that we have got together to organise with
the active support and help of SPJIMR, and we look forward to building on this to create
more opportunities not only to network but also to learn and grow. The tradition of
learning that SPJIMR gave us will thus continue through our efforts."

"We look forward to the continued support and encouragement of our faculty and of the
Institute," Ms. Sanghavi added.

Raj Sheth, alumni of the FMB batch '13April', the proprietor of Priyaaj Enterprises,
that manufactures and trades in diamond jewellery said, "We want to get together,
understand, link movies with practical life and business lessons and look for
opportunities to build on and help each other."

Pankaj Roongta, alumni of the '16Sep' batch and Proprietor of SPR Packaging, which
manufactures packaging for the pharma sector and FMCGs said, "I am happy to be part of FMB
Connect and reunions like these are a great opportunity to learn, grow and prosper. It
feels good to be connected to alumni across batches... makes me nostalgic about the good
old FMB days when I studied on this campus."

The event was organised by 'FMB Connect' which has in the past brought together alumni
for networking dinners and knowledge seminars attended by business luminaries like Kishore
Biyani, Group CEO of the Future Group and Ashok Goel, Managing Director of Essel Propack.

Learning through movies adds a new edge to the interactions and will now become a
regular feature of FMB alumni networking.

Speaking to the alumni, SPJIMR Dean Dr. Ranjan Banerjee said, "We will move really
fast to build on this initiative. We will work together, learn together to make our alumni
more successful and grow the SPJIMR brand with your support."

Prof. Atul Sethi, Head of SPJIMR's Centre for Family Managed Business said, "Our
alumni are our real strength. We stand ready to offer full support and encouragement to
our alumni and are very excited to have them back on campus. The 'movie networking night'
is an excellent example of how alumni can take the lead and create learning opportunities
with support from all of us at FMB and SPJIMR."

Dr. Tulsi Jayakumar, Programme Head of SPJIMR's FMB said, "It's a great initiative to
connect the current batch with the older batches. It's heartening to see participants from
Batch 1 and all the other batches back on campus reminiscing about their times here and
taking pride in the growth and development of the FMB programme."

Prof. Suresh Lalwani, Professor of Finance and Chairperson of SPJIMR's PGPM programme,
was at the screening of 'Inside Job' and discussed learnings from the movie with the
gathered FMB alumni. Prof. Lalwani is noted for using movies, particularly this one, to
teach the impact of the global financial crisis and how a financial contagion in distant
corners can quickly shake up businesses far and wide, including in India.

Prof. Lalwani said, "FMB alumni will get an opportunity to enlarge their perspectives,
understand the implications of the financial crisis and how world events can impact their
businesses and how they can be prepared for crisis that can come unannounced. The idea
here is to watch movies and understand real world issues and try to solve the jigsaw
puzzle that events like the financial crisis present."

"Movies can be a powerful learning tool. This one was a documentary but even movies
based on fiction can be great teaching tools... an effective pedagogy for learning deep
lessons," Prof. Lalwani added.
