The Agenda with Steve Paikin Delivers on TVO's Digital Strategy

New format increases citizen engagement by building digital public space for Ontario-perspective in-depth current affairs

TORONTO, Dec. 9, 2015 /CNW/ - TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin rings in the New Year by taking the next step in its evolution in building the digital public space for Ontario-perspective in-depth current affairs. Beginning January 4, The Agenda will unveil a more dynamic new format that makes TVO's brand of high quality journalism accessible to Ontarians where they spend time: on their desktop, on mobile devices, and on television.

"Journalism plays a key role in building strong democracies and The Agenda's new approach will allow TVO to bring citizens even more engaging high quality journalism by building a digital public space focused on Ontario-perspective, in-depth current affairs," says Lisa de Wilde, TVO's Chief Executive Officer. "It leverages The Agenda's reputation for expert analysis, depth and thoughtful debate that is unique in Canadian media. The Agenda is engaging people on the platform of their choosing and enabling them to inform themselves on the big issues defining our world."

The new format will feature segments that are equally at home online, on the newly redesigned TVO.org, as on air, and are also easier to share on social media. Content will be more digestible so that it can be consumed in whole or in part, with social media driving deeper engagement around the topics that really matter to Ontarians. The Agenda will also have an increased focus on curated online and on-air content around several themes such as: The Food Chain looking at the how, where and why of food; The Next Ontario which examines the forces shaping the future of the province; and Shared Values that asks what an inclusive society looks like. The themes are designed to foster an understanding of the social, political, cultural and economic forces that shape Ontarians' lives.

"We are creating a meaningful public conversation around some subjects that are underserved in the media landscape in terms of both coverage and tone," says John Ferri, TVO Vice President of Current Affairs and Documentaries. "What won't change is The Agenda's commitment to providing in-depth journalism and conversations focusing on regional, national and global topics through an Ontario lens. Viewers and online users can still count on Steve to ask the questions they want answered, and when warranted, to spend a full hour digging deeper on a single topic."

Complementing The Agenda's new format is a brighter and more dynamic new studio. It has been transformed to include several areas that accommodate different forms of interviews, including one-on-one discussions and debates, and commentary for when Steve responds to feedback, the producers share viewers' comments and guests of the show offer their opinions.

The Agenda's new set was made possible by the generosity of the late Donald Pounder whose Legacy Gift was the single largest donation ever made by an individual to TVO. The Agenda's new set was designed by Ontario-based set, production and interior design company, Artform.
