The National Museum of American History has partnered with the National Endowment for the Humanities to produce film forums that explore how history is presented in entertainment. To open the inaugural History Film Forum, award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Ric Burns (The Pilgrims) will deliver a keynote lecture addressing how society engages with the past through film and television and how this engagement shapes public understanding of history.
The History Film Forum includes four days of movie screenings and discussions with filmmakers, policymakers, scholars and journalists. What does it mean for films to present "good" history? What are the limits of history presented through film? What value do films have as vehicles for presenting history? The History Film Forum will bring together visitors and experts to consider these and other crucial questions concerning the relationship between history and cinema.
