The Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross Celebrates 90th Anniversary on July 12, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md., July 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross was dedicated on July 12, 1925 to honor 49 men from Prince George County, Maryland who fought and died for our country during WWI. The memorial was funded by local residents and the American Legion and is currently owned by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

In 2014, The American Humanist Association (AHA) and 3 individuals filed a lawsuit requesting that the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross be removed due to its perceived religious nature as a Christian symbol while infringing on their First Amendment rights since it is on government property owned by the State of Maryland.

Renee Green created a documentary about the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross entitled, Save The Peace Cross. She was raised in Prince George's County, Maryland and for the past year has made continual efforts in preserving the Peace Cross and this is all documented in her film. For more information visit www.SaveThePeaceCross.com and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-The-Peace-Cross/1539886132901090.

During her research for the documentary, Green realized that the Peace Cross was listed as a Historical Place but not on the National Register of Historic Places. She resubmitted an application for the Memorial Peace Cross to be nominated to the National Register and it was accepted. There was a nomination meeting at the Prince George's County Historic Preservation Committee meeting on April 21, 2015.

Green has been invited to be a speaker at the July 4th Celebration at the Peace Cross at 11:00 a. m. where she will commemorate the 90(th) Anniversary of the Peace Cross. Contact her to schedule an interview at (410) 608-2274.

She was recently quoted in the Prince George's Gazette's article Woman fights to save Bladensburg Peace Cross, "In order for people to really make a decision, they had to know the history. They have to understand it," Green said. "It's a World War I memorial dedicated to 49 men who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It represents peace."

On Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11:00 there will be special showing of the Save The Peace Cross Documentary clips and the nomination meeting video at the Battle of Bladensburg Visitor Center. RSVP to (410) 608-2274 or email Renee@savethepeacecross.com. These videos will be available upon request at any time.
