HARLEM, N.Y., June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harlem International Film Festival (Hi) announces its 10(th) Anniversary hosted at The Cecil and Minton's as well as other notable Harlem venues, September 9-13. Hi is known for showcasing the art of global cinema while integrating the best attractions Harlem has to offer. The schedule and tickets will be announced in August.
Since 2005, Hi has bestowed over 300 awards including the annual Mira Nair Award for Rising Female Filmmaker. Events include the screenplay showdown, panel discussions, the Harlem Spotlight and the Renaissance Awards. Past recipients include Harlem's own Emmy award-winning Keith David, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon, Oscar-nominated director Mira Nair and Mario Van Peebles.
This year, The Cecil and Minton's restaurants http://thececilharlem.com/presslinks/ will serve as the home of the Festival by hosting special events, with participation from owner Richard Parsons, restaurateur and executive chef Alexander Smalls, and Chef de Cuisine Joseph "JJ" Johnson. With a motto of "Less Hype, Stronger Cinema", the Festival is poised to continue nurturing relationships with filmmakers and building its presence through partnerships with visionary corporate leaders whose goals align with the interests of the Harlem community.
The Festival announces two new exciting opportunities: The Harlem Knight Film Award and the Documentary Film Completion Fund, generously provided by Damien M. Laudier. The Harlem Knight Film Award gives $500 to one local filmmaker submitting work in any genre. The Documentary Film Completion Fund awards filmmakers up to $10,000 in cash and prizes.
In 2014, the Festival had an audience of 2200+ and 92 films from 25 countries. It opened at Columbia University with the US premiere of CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT, the first film about the tremendous life of Desmond Tutu. The Hi Audience Award winner was produced by the Peace Jam organization nominated eight times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
