Girls On The Run Of Northern Virginia To Host LUNAFEST Film Festival

Girls On The Run Of Northern Virginia To Host LUNAFEST Film Festival

FAIRFAX, Va., March 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia is proud to announce LUNAFEST(®) is coming to our region. The national traveling film festival, presented by nutrition bar company Luna, showcases films by, for and about women while also benefiting local nonprofits - namely Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia and the Breast Cancer Fund. LUNAFEST will be hosted on Thursday, April 9(th) at the Angelika Film Center.

LUNAFEST is one of a series of events offered in commemoration of the 15(th) Anniversary of Girls on the Run of NOVA. Over the past 15 years, GOTR NOVA has impacted more than 50,000 local girls.

"This is a great opportunity for us to recognize the entire community that supports Girls on the Run. We want to celebrate all of the support Northern Virginia has offered girls over the last 15 years. Because of the work we've done along with volunteers, teachers, school leaders, parents, and partners, there are 50,000 girls in Northern Virginia who are stronger and more confident. Many of those girls are now women, facing the same issues presented in the films we'll see at LUNAFEST. We'll celebrate the women that were once, and always will be, Girls on the Run--strong and confident," says Katey Comerford, Executive Director of Girls on the Run of NOVA.

This season's program of eight selected films is designed to compel discussion, while also bringing laughter and some tears. Incredibly diverse in style and content, LUNAFEST is united by a common thread of exceptional storytelling - by, for and about women. LUNAFEST features filmmakers from around the world telling a variety of stories, such as Emily Fraser and Katherine Gorringe's "Lady Parts," about an automotive shop that caters to women and Susan Béjar's "Chicas Day," about a girls' day out. LUNAFEST is recommended for those 16 and older because of some nudity.
