NEH Chairman William Adams to Visit Philadelphia September 10-12
WASHINGTON, DC (September 10, 2014) - William D. "Bro" Adams, newly appointed Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will visit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 10-12.
In his inaugural trip as new NEH Chairman, Adams will meet with representatives from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and introduce filmmaker Ken Burns and historian Geoffrey Ward at a preview screening of the upcoming NEH-funded documentary series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History at the Free Library of Philadelphia.
At the invitation of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Chairman Adams will meet with administrators of Philadelphia cultural institutions, colleges and universities, and learn about the Pennsylvania Humanities Council's new Standing Together project with the University of Pennsylvania's Upward Bound program. The PHC Veterans Upward Bound project is a tuition-free 15-week academic program at the University of Pennsylvania that prepares military veterans for success in college. The program is supported through the National Endowment for the Humanities' (NEH) Standing Together initiative, which encourages humanities programs that focus on the history, experience, or meaning of war and military service.

Wednesday, September 10
1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Barnes Collection Tour
Location: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Chairman Adams will meet with Peg Zminda, Acting Director of the Barnes Foundation, curators, conservators and members of the museum's board of trustees, and take a tour of the Barnes' conservation studio and The World is an Apple: Still Lifes of Paul Cézanne exhibition.
5:30-7:30 p.m. Meeting, tour and dinner with administrators from the University of Pennsylvania
Location: University of Pennsylvania, 34(th) and Walnut Streets
Chairman Adams will tour the University of Pennsylvania Van Pelt Library and dine with administrators from the U. Penn School of Arts and Sciences, Penn Humanities Forum, Penn Libraries, and Penn Museum.
Thursday, September 11
9:00 -10:30 a.m. Meeting with Jeffrey Rosen, President of the National Constitution Center
Location: National Constitution Center, 525 Arch Street
Chairman Adams will meet with Jeffrey Rosen, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Constitution Center.
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Meeting with administrators and staff of the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Location: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26(th) Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Chairman Adams will tour the museum's American Galleries and meet with Timothy Rub, Director and CEO and Gail Harrity, President of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and members of the museum's curatorial, development, and educational programs staff.
5:00-6:00 p.m. WHYY Reception
Location: WHYY, 150 N. 6(th) Street
Chairman Adams will attend a reception at Pennsylvania public radio station WHYY for the upcoming Ken Burns' documentary series The Roosevelts.
6:30- 8:30 p.m. Preview screening of new NEH-funded documentary series The Roosevelts
Location: Free Library of Philadelphia, 1901 Vine Street
Chairman Adams will introduce filmmaker Ken Burns and historian and author Geoffrey Ward at a special preview screening of the upcoming PBS documentary series The Roosevelts: An Intimate History.The Roosevelts was produced by Ken Burns with support from a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and will premiere on PBS stations September 14-20.
Friday, September 12
8:30-10:00 a.m. Briefing on Pennsylvania Humanities Council Standing Together Project
Location: University Club, 361 Walnut Street
Chairman Adams will meet with Laurie Zierner, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Humanities, Diane Sandefur, Director of the Veterans Upward Bound program at the University of Pennsylvania, Rev. Will Gipson, Associate Vice Provost for Equity & Access Programs at the University of Pennsylvania and other PHC and U Penn representatives for a briefing on the humanities council's Standing Together project with the University of Pennsylvania's Upward Bound to prepare returning veterans for college.
10:00-12:00 p.m. Tour and Meeting at Historical Society of Pennsylvania
Location: Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 1300 Locust Street
Chairman Adams will tour the historical society and meet with Page Talbott, CEO and President. The historical society, an NEH grantee and PHC partner, will be the final reception site for the 2014 National Humanities Conference, a convening of the federation of state humanities councils.
