RT Scores Third Emmy Nomination For News

MOSCOW, Aug. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- RT became a finalist of the 2014 International Emmy Awards. RT's coverage of the Guantanamo hunger strike earned the channel its third nomination for the most prestigious television award, and its second in just three years.

"The fact that, once again, RT earned this accolade for delving deep into a story that many other news outlets might shy away from only underlines the importance of having a diversity of voices in the international news media," said RT's Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan. "RT is a force to be reckoned with on the global news landscape."

RT's Guantanamo coverage charted detention without trial at the United States' most notorious prison, as it spiraled into a mass hunger strike that ran over six months in 2013 and brought the practice of force-feeding detainees to international attention. At the core of RT's series of reports were interviews with activists, experts, and former Gitmo inmates, who delivered unique, exclusive and often disturbing insights into what goes on at this detention camp.

RT's previous nominations were in 2012 for reporting on the Occupy Wall Street movement and in 2010 for coverage of the President Barack Obama's state visit to Moscow. Finalists for the Current Affairs and News Awards are selected among entries from top international TV news channels by a panel of jurors made up of experienced television and journalism professionals. RT is the first Russian TV channel in history to receive three International Emmy nominations.

International Emmy winners will be announced on September 30, 2014, at the 35th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards Ceremony in New York, hosted by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The Academy is the world's biggest organization of television and radio broadcasters and Emmy is widely considered to be the most prestigious award in television journalism.

RT is a global international news network that broadcasts 24/7 in English, Arabic and Spanish from its studios in Moscow and Washington, DC, and is available to 644 million viewers worldwide. RT is the first TV news channel in history to cross the billion views mark on YouTube. RT is the winner of the Monte Carlo TV Festival Awards for best 24-hr broadcast, and the only Russian TV channel to garner three nominations for the prestigious International Emmy Award for News.
