Utah's "Sundance Kid" to offer advice to Westminster College's Class of 2013

SALT LAKE CITY, May 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As an environmentalist, activist and philanthropist, Robert Redford is the quintessential commencement speaker to address graduates from Utah's only private, independent liberal arts college. Westminster College, with its strong emphasis on service, social responsibility and creativity, welcomes words of wisdom from the former "Sundance Kid."

"Robert Redford's commitment and dedication to the environment align well with our college's values," said Westminster president, Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich. "We are excited to welcome a commencement speaker with a passion for broadening the creative mind, provoking thought and encouraging social responsibility."

Approximately 542 undergraduates and 404 graduate students will grace the commencement stage to receive diplomas in disciplines ranging from anthropology and aviation to physics and public health. Westminster's graduating class is made up of students from 37 states and 29 foreign countries.

Located in the nation's "best spot for new graduates," Westminster College's primary purpose is to prepare students to lead lives of learning, accomplishment and service.

"Our graduating seniors are prepared to take on lives of success and meaning and have demonstrated social responsibility through their service to the community and their commitment to the environment," added Levin-Stankevich. "Robert Redford's passionate commitment to social justice will be an exciting model for our graduates."

In addition to the emphasis on social responsibility, graduates of Westminster master a demanding curriculum grounded in the liberal arts and explore one or more disciplines in depth, often through original research. They are taught to become lifelong learners, quick to adapt to changes in their lives and in their environment.

Redford's new film, The Company You Keep, was recently released to mass audiences in April 2013.

The event will be streamed live at: www.westminstercollege.edu/live.
