New Public Service Campaign Seeks To Boost Enrollment In Music Programs

MUSIC LESSONS FOR MOTOWN

With1Note.com and 855-GO-1-NOTE Helping Everyone Find Their Music

DETROIT, May 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Motown without the music? Unthinkable. But in today's challenging economic climate, music programs need a shout out in the city celebrated for its musical greatness.

A new public service campaign funded by the Ford Foundation and the Kresge Foundation aims to create awareness and boost enrollment across the many, high-quality local programs available to the public. The campaign will also promote the tremendous value of music learning for youth development and quality of life at any age.

"Music education matters in today's economic climate," says Leonard Slatkin, Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. "Getting the abstract and creative mind working is one of the fundamental goals of music. Those sounds, the notes, the rhythms all combine to fuel an explosion of imagination, all under the watchful eyes of gifted instructors. Young people are stimulated to express themselves through the music and all of us need to encourage support for this new initiative."

Individuals and families can learn about low-cost and subsidized music programs through a new website and phone number designed to help match people with local music learning opportunities.

The site is www.with1note.com and the toll-free number is 855-Go-1-Note or 855-461-6683. The tagline for the TV and radio PSA campaign is "changing lives one note at a time," a nod to the transformative power of music for people of all ages.

Visitors can use the site's Lesson Finder to locate music programs of all kinds; while local music teachers and music program providers can post information about programs, classes, news and stories -- all for free.

The With1Note campaign is spearheaded by the Music Learning Alliance (MLA), CultureSource and the Michigan Nonprofit Association. MLA is a consortium of leading cultural/music education organizations that provide vocal or instrumental services to students of all ages throughout Southeastern Michigan. Founding members include the Detroit Children's Choir, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Michigan State University Community Music School-Detroit, the Sphinx Organization and Wayne State University's Department of Music.

The mission of the Alliance's With1Note campaign is to market regional music lessons so that families and individuals can locate the appropriate program for their children/themselves; offer alternatives to schools where music education has been cut from the curriculum; enhance school programs that currently exist; grow musical participation and learning among people of all ages; and grow the market amongst the organizations involved.

MLA partners provide supplemental music education, or continuity where programs have been eliminated from the regular school day. They work collaboratively with school systems and community leaders to fill in the gaps where most needed.

MLA programs are a feeder system for public school programs, especially at the middle and high school level, as well as a scalable model for other communities nationally.
