Fairfield County to Celebrate Israel's 65th Anniversary

WESTPORT, Conn., May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Westport Country Playhouse will be rockin' with a taste of Israel on Sunday, May 26 when Fairfield County comes together to celebrate Israel's 65(th) birthday. A concert by renowned Israeli world music group "The Shuk" anchors a day dedicated to the founding of Israel and fostering greater understanding of Jewish and Israeli culture.

The event begins at 2 p.m. with free admission to an Israeli marketplace of unique wares, from handmade jewelry, crafts and Ethiopian-Israeli embroidery to Naot footwear and an extensive book mart of English and Hebrew selections. Authentic Mediterranean delights such as falafel and hummus will be available from a kosher concession.

A pre-concert VIP briefing will feature a discussion of current Israeli affairs with Eli Groner, Israel's Minister of Economic Affairs to the United States.

The Shuk takes the stage at 5 p.m. Their unique fusion of folk and world music brings people of all backgrounds together in a most unique way in order to not only experience Jewish culture but to gain an appreciation, respect, and mutual understanding for all cultures and people around the world.

"Fairfield County can seem a universe away from Israel, and this celebration is a wonderful way to transport and immerse ourselves in a bit of Israeli culture, while at the same time showing support for Israel," said Steve Friedlander, executive director of UJA/Federation Westport Weston Wilton Norwalk.

Admission to the Israeli marketplace is free. Tickets for The Shuk performance are available for purchase at www.westportplayhouse.org/buytickets (203) 227-4177. For more information: www.ujafederation.org / (203) 226-8197
