"Girl Power" Archery Clinic Hits the Target





WHO:

A capacity crowd of girls, age 8 to 13, from Chicago's Noble Square neighborhood, eager to get a hands-on "shot" at one of the fastest growing sports among girls their age, nationwide,

Female Olympians and Paralympians, including Olympic archer/Pan American Games Gold Medalist Stephanie Miller, and

One of the characters widely credited with sparking the current archery craze among tween girls - Merida, the fiery, red headed sharpshooter from Disney-Pixar's animated hit BRAVE and the latest Disney On Ice spectacular to hit Chicago, Disney On Ice Presents Rockin' Ever After...



WHAT:

...participating in a free "Girl Power" Archery Clinic, co-sponsored by World Sport Chicago and Disney On Ice.

With prominent exposure in Disney-Pixar's BRAVE and other recent movie blockbusters, USA Archery reports Facebook and Twitter numbers tripling in the past year. Among the many benefits of the sport, proponents tout the development of fine motor control, discipline, mental focus and patience.



WHEN:

3:30 - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013



WHERE:

Pulaski Park Auditorium, 1419 W. Blackhawk, Chicago



PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES:

Scores of girls, some wearing Merida wigs to channel their inner sharpshooter, learning basic technique and shooting at targets, under the tutelage of World Sport Chicago archery coaches.

Merida, herself, in full regalia, greeting and encouraging the girls.



WHY:

Created as the legacy of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Sport Chicago is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in under-served Chicago communities through sport. World Sport Chicago partners with the Chicago Park District to offer archery classes at Pulaski Park.

Disney On Ice Presents Rockin' Ever After, featuring the on-ice debut of Merida and friends from Disney-Pixar's BRAVE, opens a two-week engagement at Chicago's United Center on Wednesday, Jan. 30, with performances through Feb. 10.
