SATURDAY, MAY 26: PEGGY LEE
Profile America -- Saturday, May 26th. Today honors singer Peggy Lee's 92nd birthday. One of the most distinctive vocalists, her career spanned nearly seven decades. Born Norma Egstrom, she started singing around her hometown in North Dakota. Benny Goodman heard her and invited her to join his band. Peggy Lee soon proved she was also a talented songwriter and actress. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Pete Kelly's Blues" and played four different roles in the Disney movie, "Lady and the Tramp." She was nominated for 12 Grammys, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Now, there are 182,000 musicians and singers in the U.S., about a third of them women.
