Ellington Big Band, Southwest Jazz and the Fab Four Headline Tucson's 2nd SATURDAYS in January

TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The sounds of award winning jazz and a "spot on" Beatles tribute will drift over Downtown Tucson for the popular 2nd SATURDAYS event scheduled from 4-9pm, January 14th. The Tucson Jazz Institute's Ellington Band, winner of the national Ellington Big Band competition last year, will appear for free at the Fox Theatre from 7-9pm.

2nd SATURDAYS has launched its second free outdoor stage located on 5th Avenue, just south of Congress Street. It will feature jazz and R&B acts every month, led by nationally recognized jazz artist Kevin Hamilton. The Scott Avenue Stage will continue to feature rock, folk and Cajun bands, also for free, starting at 4pm to take advantage of the weather. The ultimate Beatles band, the Fab Four, just wrapping a PBS filmed concert, will appear in a paid show at the Rialto Theatre. Additional music acts will line the street and fill venues from Hotel Congress to the Fox Theatre.

4-4:45pm: Deceptively Innocent, boys between the
ages of 14-16, will be performing Rock/
Pop Punk/Alternative covers and
originals.


Mitzi Cowell & The Valiants, known for
their smart, swampadelic, spiritual-
uplift desert groove-blues for
ecstatic dancers and discriminating
listeners alike. The band features
Gary Mackender and Nick Augustine on
rhythm, with fully-baked Tucson native
Mitzi Cowell on guitar, vocals, and
songwriting. Special guests are always
5-6:15pm: likely!

Heather "Lil Mama" Hardy Band. Hardy's
third release, "Get Out of the Road,"
showcases the musician's sweet violin
electrified in a positive bluesy/soul
album with spiritual overtones. (Zocalo

8-9pm: The Last Call Girls, high energy
Country-Cajun-Celtic Americana with
three part harmonies, fiddle, accordion
and tin whistle.


Rialto Theatre:

The Fab Four: The Ultimate Tribute. Show time is 8pm. $35

Club Congress:

Underground rap collective Hieroglyphics. Show time is 8pm. $15-$18

Science Downtown:

CenturyLink Presents: Mars and Beyond. This exhibition is dedicated to rotating science-based programs to Tucson and all of Arizona. 2nd SATURDAYS hours are 9am-9pm. Check discounts, others dates and hours at www.sciencedowntown.org.

The Cricket Kids' Area is the place you'll find the Cricket Jumping Castle and other projects to entertain which includes a FREE G-rated kids movie. The movie begins at about 5:45pm.

The street scene is always hopping with car clubs, musicians, "jukebox" statues and vendors, including new merchants on 5(th) Avenue. Many businesses will offer specials. 2nd SATURDAYS Downtown runs from 4 to 9pm.
