Profile America -- Sunday, November 27th. One of rock music's top guitarists was born on this date in 1942 in Seattle. Jimi Hendrix started as a sideman for rhythm and blues artists, then moved to London. There, he formed his own group, which provided a platform for his innovation. His over-the-top style of guitar playing and songs such as "Purple Haze" established a lasting reputation before he died of a drug overdose in 1970. The spending by American music fans ebbs

and flows with the constant change in technology. One of those changes is occurring now. In 2000, we spent more than $13 billion on CDs, by last year, that number had dropped to $3.4 billion as consumers increasingly switched to electronic downloads of their favorite music.
