Zocalo Public Square, Azteca America and Grupo Salinas Present "Telling Mexico's Stories" Discussion to be Held on June 2 at The Heard Museum
PHOENIX, May 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
WHAT:
Drug violence in Mexico is far from being the country's central story, but at times it feels like it is consuming all our bandwidth. Any nation has a number of narrative threads, and Mexicans have long grappled with how best to tell their story, from the days of the Aztec Codex to the tales of Bernal Diaz del Castillo to the murals of Orozco and Rivera. Today, Mexico's narrative threads are diverse, seemingly contradictory: the country is democratizing, in fits and starts; it is becoming a middle-class nation, but retains horrifying levels of poverty; the nation's cultural assets are the envy of the world, if increasingly overshadowed by the pall of narcoviolence. What is the story of Mexico, and how should its storytellers capture it? How to reconcile so many contradictory narrative threads? Panelists including Dallas Morning News Mexico City bureau chief Alfredo Corchado, Belo TV border bureau chief Angela Kocherga, Imagen News and Proyecto 40 hostAna Maria Salazar and Gatopardo editor Guillermo Osorno visit Zocalo to explore how to create a coherent story for a country with so many divergent and demanding plot lines. The discussion will be moderated by Mexico City-based news producer Susana Seijas.

About Zocalo Public Square
Zocalo Public Square connects people to ideas and to each other in an open, accessible, non-partisan and broad-minded spirit. Through our web magazine, lectures, panels, screenings, and conferences, Zocalo takes on ideas that enhance our understanding of community-the forces that strengthen or undermine human connectedness and social cohesion.
We believe that over specialization and narrowcasting undermine the public square and are committed to welcoming a new, young and diverse generation to the conversation.
Established in Los Angeles in 2003, Zocalo roams across L.A., and has traveled to Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, and as far as Shanghai, Berlin and Guadalajara. We're now making a home in Phoenix. In our eight years, we have featured over 800 compelling thinkers and doers from a wide range of fields-politics, governance, humanities, health, economics, education, technology, foreign policy, arts, science and beyond-who explore how we see and relate to one another, be it locally, regionally, nationally, or globally.
