Ugly Dogs Unleashed on Petaluma's Phoenix Theater
New film a behind-the-scenes look at World's Ugliest Dog Contest®
PETALUMA, Calif., April 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Finally, after screenings in San Francisco, Berkeley and Sacramento (and winning the Best Documentary Award at the Kansas City Film Festival), "Worst in Show" arrives in Petaluma - hometown of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest.
Every summer, dozens of gnarly mutts face off at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, to decide who takes home the title of World's Ugliest Dog. After the showdown, the winner's mug is plastered on websites worldwide thanks to the Associated Press, the BBC and "The Today Show."
Award-winning Bay Area documentary filmmakers John Beck and Don R. Lewis go behind the scenes to meet the obsessive owners and their Chinese crested hairless purebreds, one-eyed rescue dogs and boxers with nasty underbites. Along the way, they uncover the fiercely competitive underworld of the ugly dog circuit leading up to the finals.
But what starts out as an absurd proposition - essentially an "ugly pageant" - evolves into a heartwarming rescue dog story. Along the way, you'll meet past champions, travel to a doggie dude ranch in Santa Barbara and witness Jane Russell's final screen appearance.
At the Petaluma screening, you can bring your own dog and meet the world-famous ugly dogs and their owners, talk to the filmmakers and watch one of the most unlikely rescue dog movies ever filmed.
1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at the Phoenix Theater, 201 Washington St., Petaluma. Buy $10 tickets at www.worstinshowmovie.com.
"A sweet and well-intentioned documentary that will have special appeal to pet lovers (especially those who have rescued an animal from the pound)." - Huffington Post
"Amid all the patchy fur, bad eyes, underbites, and malformed legs, it's the big hearts and outsized egos that truly stand out in this portrait of pageant motherhood at its most extreme." - SF Bay Guardian
"Sweet, hilarious and startlingly touching documentary." - The Bohemian
