Topway Collaborates With Broadcom to Launch Network Trials in China Using the DOCSIS®-Based EoC Technology

Broadcom's Innovative, Standards-Based Cable Technology Accelerates China's Three Network Convergence

BEIJING, March 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- CCBN 2011-- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that Topway has selected its DOCSIS®-based Ethernet over Coax (EoC) cable architecture to launch their network trials next month in Shenzhen. Broadcom's customized, highly integrated and cost-efficient DOCSIS-based EoC solution supports China's Next Generation Broadcast (NGB) initiative enabling the convergence of telecommunications, internet and cable television networks in China.

Broadcom's DOCSIS-based EoC technology is integrated into ZTE's OLT ZXA10 C300 Coaxial Media Converter (CMC) system. Broadcom DOCSIS-based EoC technology features standardized quality of service (QoS) and interoperability that includes powerful Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) methods that have already been successfully deployed in China. The CMC transitions the DOCSIS-based customer premise equipment (CPE) from a multi-dwelling unit (MDU) coaxial network to an EPON fiber network. As a result, Topway can take advantage of a number of the benefits of a DOCSIS- based network while providing an economical architecture to implement triple-play services to MDUs in China.

Playing a key role in driving China's NGB initiative, Broadcom will be demonstrating its innovative DOCSIS-based EoC cable infrastructure solution at this week's China Content Broadcasting Network (CCBN) Exhibition located at the China International Exhibition Center (CIEC), booth #3501, Beijing, China.

Highlights/ Key Facts:

-- China's State Council listed accelerated triple network convergence as
an important policy in 2010, and local scholars estimate that triple
network convergence will induce investment and consumption to the tune
of 700 billion yuan (about US$103 billion) in the next three years,
according to DigiTimes Research.
-- Topway develops, operates, manages and provides infrastructure for the
delivery and transmission of digital TV services in Shenzhen, and is the
exclusive digital TV service provider in the region (this is a special
economic zone in China).
-- ZTE is a world leader of telecommunications equipment and
Fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) network solution provider.
-- Leveraging existing EPON standards and customizing DOCSIS technology as
a 'final 100 meter' solution, Broadcom's DOCSIS-based EoC cable
architecture is a complete chipset and software solution that includes
CMC, DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 cable modem and STB system-on-a-chip (SoC)
solutions.
-- Features TurboQAM® technology that provides a 33 percent
improvement over reverse path speeds and a 25 percent improvement
over downstream speeds in support of the DOCSIS 3.0 specification.
-- Provides advanced ingress and impulse noise mitigation technologies
for S-CDMA (synchronous code division multiple access) transmission
mode. Broadcom's S-CDMA Ingress Noise Cancellation or SINC
technology allows operators to maximize use of the reverse path
bandwidth for C-DOCSIS-based applications to deliver reliable, fast
interactive services.
-- With the addition of DOCSIS-based EoC to Broadcom's DOCSIS-based
Mediation Layer (MLTM) software suite, Chinese service providers can
leverage existing and widely available back office systems and tools
to rapidly deploy NGB services.
-- Broadcom's DOCSIS-based EoC cable architecture is shipping to customers.

Quotes:

Mr. Jiang Wenbo, the President of Academy of Broadcasting Planning, SARFT:

"'Next-generation broadcasting and TV network (NGB)' is a major technical measure for the radio and TV industry to promote network convergence. First, it will be deployed in cable TV networks in a bid to promote the interconnection of cable TV networks in China, build a nationwide two-way business and technology platform, provide technical support for operators to deliver cross-field businesses, offer users richer radio and TV programs as well as diversified services, and push forward cable network integration in the country. Among them, access technology is key for NGB. Technology based on CableLabs' DOCSIS® specifications and PON+EoC are both technical options for NGB and meet the cable TV network technology system which will achieve wide applications in current two-way cable TV reconstruction"

Dr. Xu Jiangshang, Chief Engineer of Topway

"As one of the leading providers of high definition and interactive television services in China, Broadcom's solution can help cable operators to meet stringent infrastructure requirements for deploying triple-play services to MDUs in China. Broadcom's proven standards-based technology and cost-effective, innovative solutions for the Chinese market will promote a high-quality TV, broadband and telephone experience for subscribers."

Dan Marotta, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group

"Leveraging our leadership and proven ability in designing innovative cable technology, our DOCSIS-based EoC solution is a standards-based, cost-effective way for Topway to ensure a high quality voice, video and data experience for their subscribers, while accelerating the deployment for advanced services, HDTV programming and the ability to connect devices and share content in the home."
