"DLP Cinema's continued worldwide leadership in the 2D/3D digital cinema space provides theatre owners, studios, and, most important, moviegoers with an experience that simply cannot be equaled," said Dave Duncan, manager of DLP Cinema for Texas Instruments. "2010 was clearly an amazing year for DLP Cinema. Although the digital conversion was steady for the first 10 years, 2010 will be noted as a milestone in digital cinema history, as the number of DLP Cinema projectors nearly doubled in one year. This decade looks extremely bright for DLP Cinema and its licensees. Together with our partners, nearly one-half of the world's theatre screens will be converted to DLP Cinema by the end of 2011."

In the period between March 2, 2010 and March 2, 2011, the number of DLP Cinema screens showing 2D Hollywood content worldwide grew 101 percent to a total of 33,110 (up from 16,446), and 128 percent for 3D Hollywood content, finishing at 22,287 (from 9,758). These counts do not include IMAX's digital theatre installations powered by DLP Cinema, which separately grew 91 percent for a total of 296 screens (from 155) during the same period, following their record-breaking total revenue in 2010 of $246.8M.

Latin America saw the highest amounts of growth during this same 12 month timeframe, with a 187 percent increase for DLP Cinema screens playing 2D Hollywood content (1,743 screens total), and 184 percent increase for 3D (1,702 screens total). In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the number of DLP Cinema installations rose to 11,428 (136 percent change) and 8,686 (136 percent change) for displaying 2D and 3D Hollywood content respectively. The Asia Pacific region also experienced significant expansion, with a 118 percent increase to 8,343 screens for 2D Hollywood content, and a 142 percent increase to 5,447 screens for 3D. All told, DLP Cinema technology remains the number one choice for exhibitors everywhere, lighting up the vast majority of the world's digital cinema screens.
