In each issue of The Private Journey magazine, "The Givers" editorial compartment pays tribute to exemplary humanitarians and tells the story of their philanthropic journeys with the hope that their efforts will inspire a "Giver" within the reader.
John Legend -- the "Giver" featured in our January 2011 issue -- launched The Show Me Campaign in 2007 to speak out on behalf of those who don't have a voice. Legend credits Jeffrey Sachs' book The End of Poverty as a major source of inspiration for the launch of the Campaign, and regards Mr. Sachs and Bill Gates as model humanitarians for their approaches to giving back.
Legend's work with The Show Me Campaign has influenced him as an individual as well as a Grammy award-winning artist. Legend explains that his latest album, Wake Up!, which he recorded with The Roots, was largely inspired by the work he has been doing politically and philanthropically.
The Show Me Campaign partners with various organizations in the United States and abroad with the aim to forge a path out of poverty. In the U.S., Show Me works with Harlem Village Academies and Teach For America to fight for education reform. In Africa, Show Me partners with Millennium Villages to provide impoverished villages with the tools necessary to build a sustainable infrastructure inclusive of clinics, schools and clean drinking water.
Prior to John Legend and The Show Me Campaign, The Private Journey magazine featured Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in "The Givers" editorial compartment in recognition of his humanitarian efforts as founder of the After-School All-Stars nonprofit organization.
