SUNDAY, DECEMBER 26: TELEVISION REMOTES

Profile America -- Sunday, December 26th. The day after Christmas is often a quiet time -- a lull after the busy pace of the weeks before the holiday. Many will spend the day in a comfortable chair, flipping through television channels. The fact that this can be done is due to the work of Robert Adler of the Zenith Corporation, who in 1956 invented the wireless ultrasound remote. There had been remotes before, but they were attached to the receiver by an awkward cable. Adler's cordless remote was based on ultrasound and was in use for many years. Today's remote controls use infrared technology to flip the channels on the nation's 311 million television sets -- which works out to an average of close to three sets per household. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
