SUNDAY, JULY 11: U.S. MARINE CORPS BAND
Profile America -- Sunday, July 11th. On this date in 1798, the U.S. Marine Corps Band was established by an act of Congress. It is the oldest of the U.S. military bands and the oldest professional musical organization in the country. The band is known as "The President's Own," because of its unique relationship with the White House. The group has played at every president's inauguration since that of Thomas Jefferson, and today plays some 300 times a year at the White House. The band's most famous conductor and composer was John Philip Sousa, who wrote the official Marine march, Semper Fidelis. Today, those in the Marine Band are part of a force of U.S. marines numbering just under 200,000 men and women.
