Framestore NY Launches Film Division

Framestore NY Launches Film Division

Bringing World Class VFX Talent and Experience to the East Coast

NEW YORK, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Framestore NY is pleased to announce that it has launched a film division to offer Framestore quality VFX work to the film community working on the East Coast. The first major film project to come out of this newly launched film department is the summer blockbuster, Salt, a Columbia Pictures film directed by Phillip Noyce and starring Angelina Jolie. As the lead VFX studio on Salt, Framestore NY worked on 339 shots, seamlessly blending their VFX and CGi work into the film. Additional work coming out of the film division at Framestore NY includes work on Clash of the Titans, as well as the upcoming movies Morning Glory and The Smurfs.

An impressive collection of talent has been brought over from Framestore UK to launch the film division in the New York office. The founding members of the film division bring with them a long history of working on some of the biggest films that have been produced by Framestore UK, and they are excited to combine their extensive film experience with the existing East Coast Framestore talent.

The new members of the Framestore NY office include Sarah Dowland, VFX Executive Producer at Framestore New York, who has been brought on to set up and develop the film division. In the UK Sarah worked on some of the most high profile Framestore UK films including Harry Potter Prison of Azkaban (which received an Academy Award nomination), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and V for Vendetta. VFX Supervisor Ivan Moran joins Framestore NY from the UK office. Before moving across the Atlantic, Ivan was VFX Supervisor on Triangle. At Framestore UK, Ivan worked as the Compositing Supervisor for some of Framestore's larger features and he was instrumental in developing many of the compositing tools used for the underwater sequence on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as well as for the iconic polar bear work on Framestore's Oscar-winning The Golden Compass. Ivan is charged with setting up the film division and he is committed to leading the New York film teams to produce the same world-class visuals that they have come to expect from Framestore UK. Also from Framestore UK is CG Supervisor Theo Jones. In the UK Theo led the development of the water pipeline for Wolfgang Petersen's Troy and worked on Doom before moving on to the development of creature rendering on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the ocean simulation on Superman Returns. Theo joins Ivan and Sarah in establishing the film division as well as taking the lead on CG for all feature film projects.

"We are really excited to add a film division to Framestore in New York," says Dowland. "There is a very established film community here, lots of directors and editors live and work on the East Coast, and we wanted to offer our experience in producing high-end world-class visual effects to it. We have an incredible team who can lead creative and technical VFX services out of New York and we also have the experience and power of the global Framestore Group. We share pipelines, assets, and tools with Framestore London and Framestore Iceland, which allows us to tap into a depth of resources for the best production plan for any size sequence or show."

Using the same model that has made the commercial department of Framestore NY so successful, the film department will maintain the cultural integrity of Framestore NY as it currently exists but will be committed to film and the film culture. The plans for this expansion into film include a new floor of the Framestore office dedicated solely to the film work as well as ramped up facilities and plans for a digital projection room. This separate section of the office will host a dedicated team of artists exclusively committed to Framestore NY film work.

"We are excited about the addition of a film division at Framestore NY," said Jon Collins, Framestore NY President. "Just as we recognized an opportunity to provide premium VFX/CGi to the East Coast agencies seven years ago, we are now recognizing a demand for top level film VFX/CGi. I would not have done this if I didn't feel that I had exactly the right team to bring Framestore's exacting standards to the NY Film Department - fortunately, in Sarah, Ivan and Theo I have three people who have several years of film experience at Framestore. I knew that they were the ideal core around which to build a team and over the last twelve months they have repaid my faith in them several times over."

Seven years after first opening its doors in order to offer its world-class VFX talent to the advertising world, Framestore NY now recognizes a need for exceptional VFX film capabilities on the East Coast. Framestore NY is excited that its new film division will play a key part in the development of a thriving VFX film community in New York.
