WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2: JOHNNY WEISSMULLER
Profile America -- Wednesday, June 2nd. Today marks the birthday in 1904 of one of the nation's most remarkable swimmers, who became a noted movie star -- Johnny Weissmuller. He came to America in 1905 through Ellis Island as a German immigrant. The family doctor urged the youngster to take up swimming to combat the effects of polio. As a swimmer, he won five Olympic Gold medals, 52 U.S. National Championships, and set 67 world records. After his swimming career was over, he became a movie star -- appearing in 12 films as Tarzan, and 13 as Jungle Jim. More than 52 million Americans enjoy swimming each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
