MEDIA ALERT: Re-enrolled Teens Showcase Films at 3rd Annual Chicago Youth Film Festival 'A Reel Look at their Neighborhoods'

Teen Films Give Voice to Challenges Faced on Chicago's Streets & Neighborhoods

WHAT: From the violence of Chicago's streets, life's missed
opportunities, bad breaks and poverty, to Lake Michigan's
water pollution issues, and Chicago's hot Westside dance
culture, these hard hitting topics from teens who dropped out
and returned to school will be featured at the 3rd Annual
Chicago Youth Community Film Festival, "A Reel Look at their
Neighborhoods (Reel Look)."

An awards presentation and film screening will showcase 38
winning short films produced by Chicago students who had
dropped out of high school and have re-enrolled back into
small, community-based high schools.

The Film Festival drew in entries from 290 youth from across
the Chicago area. Films were developed in classes taught by
Chicago Community TV Network video instructors and sponsored
by the Alternative Schools Network. All of the films were
created for broadcast and webcast.

A reception begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by an awards
ceremony at 5:30 p.m. and a screening of winning film clips
at 6:30 p.m.

WHY: "Reel Look" gives Chicago dropout youth who have come back to
school the opportunity to share their stories to a wide and
varied audience about the issues they live and face each day.
The Festival also enables youth to develop the skills and
techniques to become filmmakers and work from behind the
camera as successful producers, directors and editors.

WHO: This year's Film Festival judges include:
-- Eduardo Arocho, Poet; Adjunct Professor at DePaul
University
-- Douglas Bonner, filmmaker and media journalist
-- Dr. Elizabeth Bouchard, Professor Emeritus at City
Colleges of Chicago
-- Carmine Cervi, filmmaker and partner in Bulletproof Films
-- John Petrakis, Professor of Film, Video and New Media,
School of the Art Institute of Chicago and film critic
for the Chicago Tribune
-- Michael W. Phillips, Jr., Programming Director of the
Chicago International Movies and Music Festival and Bank
of America Cinema
-- Dinesh Sabu, filmmaker with Kartemquin Films
-- Dianne Zazycki, artist, juror with the Chicago
International Children's Film Festival, and Program
Improvement Support Manager at UIC Monarch Center,
Special Education Faculty at Minority Institutions Higher
Education.
