Fundacion Azteca and Fundacion Azteca America, Non-Profit Arms of Grupo Salinas, Launch Binational Awareness and Fundraising Campaign for Pediatric Cancer Care
MEXICO CITY, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Fundacion Azteca and Fundacion Azteca America, non-profit arms of Grupo Salinas, in Mexico and the United States, respectively, have launched a multi-media Movimiento Azteca awareness and fundraising program to support the Casa de la Amistad foundation to treat victims of pediatric cancer in Mexico.
Unlike adult cancer, which can often be linked to unhealthy lifestyles, pediatric or childhood cancer is most likely to be caused by genetic disorders. Casa de la Amistad has provided comprehensive support to children from low-income families in Mexico for over 20 years.
The institution was founded by the parents of a child with cancer. After experiencing the enormous cost to treat their child's illness and seeing all the difficulties that low-income families face to get treatment, they opened a hostel for families traveling to Mexico City to get proper treatment. Later, they expanded their role and began buying medicine for the patients. Today, La Casa de la Amistad offers room and board, medicine and informational workshops to help cancer victims and their families.
The fundraising goal for the campaign is 5 million pesos, which will fund treatment for over 100 children.
"Childhood cancer is a silent killer that can take harsh tolls on its victims and families," said Fundacion Azteca Executive President Esteban Moctezuma Barragan. "We hope this binational effort exceeds its goals."
Once again, Grupo Salinas, led by its founder and chairman, Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego, confirms the generosity of Mexicans and the awareness of the importance of health care within Mexican society.
"We are pleased to bridge international borders with this important Movimiento Azteca awareness and fundraising drive to help children in need," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network.
