Boston Red Sox Manager Featured on 'Sharing Miracles'

Boston Red Sox Manager Featured on 'Sharing Miracles'

WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As recently reported in The Sun-Herald, Boston Red Sox Manager and two-time World Series champion Terry Francona will be featured during the month of April on Sharing Miracles - a 30-minute public affairs television program that tells the compelling and inspirational stories of real patients.

Sharing Miracles airs on more than 300 television stations nationwide and is sponsored by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).

Francona - widely credited with breaking "the curse of the Bambino" in his first year in Boston - has led the Red Sox to World Series victory twice since being named manager in 2004, making him the first manager to ever win his first eight games in the Series. He now boasts the second-most wins of any manager in franchise history.

However, Francona almost didn't make it to Boston. In 2002, he was recovering from knee surgery when he boarded a cross-country flight. He began to suffer from shortness of breath and numbness. His condition worsened and, upon arriving home, he went straight to the hospital and learned that he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism. This led to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially fatal condition that compromises his circulatory system and requires constant monitoring.

In this month's Sharing Miracles, he talks about life with DVT and chronic knee problems. "I've had my share of health issues and I know that I'm fortunate to be here," he acknowledges.

Not every patient is so lucky. That's why America 's pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies currently have more than 300 new medicines in development to treat pulmonary diseases like DVT and stroke.
