Salinas Pliego to the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW), during the organization's annual conference held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University.

During an address to SABEW members, students and faculty, Mr. Salinas presented a talk entitled "U.S.-Mexico Business Relations: Looking to 2020," with the message that there are many more economic and societal benefits to be had from a closer business relationship between the United States and Mexico.

Citing successful cross-border regional promotional efforts, Mr. Salinas said that by taking advantage of strengths of Mexico and the United States will lead to higher investment levels, increased economic growth and more jobs.

"Our two countries have a strong business relationship and it should grow," he said. "We share common opportunities and problems. We need to focus on the opportunities and build bridges, not fences."

He also emphasized further bilateral cooperation to reduce drug-related violence.

"The issue isn't one of pointing fingers, but of finding a solution to this cancer together."

Finally, he recommended to the audience a more open policy toward immigration.

"We live in a world of open borders when it comes to technology, goods, ideas and services. So why not immigration?"
