Profile America -- Saturday, December 26th. One of America's most talented entertainers was born on this date in 1921. Steve Allen is usually remembered as the original host of the "Tonight Show," although he wrote thousands of songs and authored more than 50 books. For decades, he entertained radio and television audiences with a unique brand of humor, described as sometimes sophisticated and subtle, and at other times bordering on slapstick. He was also a fine piano player, and played the role of Benny Goodman in the movie, "The Benny Goodman Story." When Steve Allen began hosting the "Tonight Show," there were just over 400 commercial television stations in the U.S. Now, that number is nearly 1,400. Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census.
