Countdown to Copenhagen: Science, Politics, and Security
Dialogue's "Wilson Center Spotlight" Television Program Focuses on Climate Change
WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Next month, the nations of the world will hold a climate conference in Denmark to discuss a new agreement to prevent climate changes. As we look ahead to Copenhagen, this edition of Dialogue's "Wilson Center Spotlight" focuses on the role of the Center's Environmental Change and Security Program.
Host John Milweski speaks with Michael MacCracken, John Broder, and Geoff Dabelko on the science, politics, and security aspects of climate change:
-- Other greenhouse gases "will have as much warming effect on the 21st century as the CO2 emissions emitted during this century," argues Michael MacCracken, chief scientist for climate change programs at the Climate Institute. -- The New York Times reporter John Broder tells Milewski, "I wouldn't be too pessimistic about Copenhagen. This is an important moment in history. Even Kyoto took four years to actually implement after it was ratified by the nations that participate in it. This is a process and it's well-begun." -- "It's not that [climate change is] going to create a new type of conflict, but it's going to exacerbate some of these underlying conditions that make countries unstable," warns Geoff Dabelko, director of the Wilson Center's Environmental Change and Security Program.
