SRS Delivers Solution to Eliminate Annoying Volume-Level Fluctuations for DTV Viewers

MSOs and Set-Top-Box Makers Can Deploy SRS TruVolume on Cable, Satellite and IPTV Boxes Through Firmware Upgrades

SANTA ANA, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SRS Labs (NASDAQ: SRSL) , the industry leader in surround sound, audio, and voice technologies, announced today the availability of SRS TruVolume(TM) for a broad selection of MPEG-4 single-chip decoders from STMicroelectronics, a world leader in set-top-box (STB) integrated circuits (ICs). As a result, cable, satellite, pay and free-to-air DTT operators, as well as STB makers can instantly enable SRS TruVolume for SD and HD content in both analog and digital streams to instantly eliminate the annoying volume fluctuations for consumer TV viewers.

TruVolume utilizes minimal memory and processing power on the MPEG-4 ICs, making the solution easy to deploy into STB boxes already in subscribers' homes as well as in new production boxes so long as they use the following ST MPEG-4 chips: STi7100, ST231, STi7105, STi7108, STi7109, STi5202, STi7200 and the new STi7141.

SRS TruVolume eliminates volume fluctuations normally encountered when switching between sources, channels, and when programming transitions to commercials. SRS TruVolume is an intuitive new solution that provides end consumers with the most comfortable and consistent volume levels, which enables a truly relaxing TV viewing experience.

"STMicroelectronics was the first SRS platform partner to enable and certify SRS TruVolume in set-top-box ICs," said Joanna Skrdlant, Senior Director of the Global Platform Partner Program for SRS Labs. "As our initial solution partner for set-top-boxes, ST's knowledge of set-top-box ICs and support in providing evaluation systems for their existing customers has provided us with valuable insight and opportunity to address the unique challenges of volume leveling in today's complex cable, satellite, pay and free-to-air boxes."

Multiple Service Operators (MSOs) can now quickly address four key areas with one simple solution to:

-- Improve subscriber satisfaction -- Solve a highly noticeable problem that subscribers mistakenly blame on the service provider -- Provide service differentiation from other MSOs -- Dramatically reduce customer support expenses related to daily subscriber complaints

"Confirming SRS' position as a leader in audio solutions for the consumer home entertainment market, TruVolume is a compelling audio solution for the set-top-box market," said Eric Jumelet, Vice President Operations, Home Video Division STMicroelectronics. "The volume leveling issue has been around for years in the home entertainment industry and now our customers' set-top-boxes can deploy an efficient, elegant audio post-processing solution that not only solves the problem, but provides end-user value through the recognition and value of the SRS brand."

ST's MPEG-4 ICs, such as the STi7141, combine support for high-definition TV and sophisticated DVR (Digital Video Recorder) functions in a single component, allowing providers to reduce deployment costs while also driving subscriber take-up of innovative and exciting new services such as next-generation interactivity. Through the addition of SRS TruVolume, providers can deliver a solution to their subscribers that eliminates the annoying volume discrepancies between programming and commercials, switching from channel to channel and between SD and HD content.

SRS TruVolume is available today as a pre-ported library for ST's STi7100, ST231, STi7105, STi7108, STi7109, STi5202, STi7200 and STi7141 processors and must be integrated into STB firmware.

OEMs and ODMs that wish to evaluate SRS audio technologies on ST processors should contact STMicroelectronics or Joanna Skrdlant at JoannaS@srslabs.com. For MSOs and set-top-box makers, contact Gordon Schenk, Managing Director, MSO/STB at SRS Labs, GordonS@srslabs.com.
